Karnaphuli Tunnel

The Karnaphuli Tunnel is a remarkable engineering feat that connects the port city of Chittagong with the rest of Bangladesh. It is the first underwater road tunnel in South Asia, and it reduces the travel time between Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar by more than half. The tunnel is named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. The tunnel was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping on October 28, 2023. The tunnel consists of two parallel tubes that are 10.8 meters in diameter and 3.32 kilometers long. The tunnel was constructed by China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC), using a large-diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) that was manufactured in China. The TBM excavated the tunnel segments from both ends simultaneously, creating a smooth and safe passage for vehicles and pedestrians. The tunnel has four lanes for traffic, with two lanes for each direction. The Karnaphuli Tunnel is expected to improve the transport infrastructure and connectivity of Bangladesh, as well as boost its economy and tourism. It will also contribute to the Asian Highway Network, which aims to link major cities across Asia through high-speed roads. The tunnel is a symbol of national pride and progress for Bangladesh, as well as a testament to its cooperation with China.
